2001 Patriots: AFC East Champs

11-5-0, 1st in AFC East Division

Schedule and Results

The 2001 New England Patriots finished the regular season with an 11-5 record, good for first place in the AFC East Division. The Patriots' schedule included wins over the New York Jets (twice), Miami Dolphins (twice), Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts, San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos, and Kansas City Chiefs. Their losses came against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Oakland Raiders, Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers, and St. Louis Rams.

The Patriots' success in 2001 was due in large part to the play of quarterback Tom Brady, who threw for 3,328 yards and 28 touchdowns. Running back Antowain Smith also had a strong season, rushing for 1,157 yards and 12 touchdowns. The Patriots' defense was also solid, led by cornerback Ty Law and linebacker Tedy Bruschi.

The Patriots' success in 2001 was a sign of things to come. The team would go on to win Super Bowl XXXVI the following season, and would become one of the most dominant teams in the NFL in the early 21st century.
